YOUNG ARTIST, YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER, YOUNG CHEF and YOUNG WRITER COMPETITIONS ARE NOW UNDER WAY WITH A DEADLINE OF EARLY DECEMBER FOR ENTRIES TO BE JUDGED, WINNERS GOING THROUGH TO ROTARY DISTRICT COMPETITION

HERE IS ANOTHER BRILLIANT CHEF ON HIS WAY TO FURTHER ACHIEVEMENTS !

TOM HAMBLET
Tom said: “Rotary Young Chef was a good experience. It was all about the practice you put in outside of the rounds. All competitions are like that, you’ve really got to graft, make sure your timings are right so nothing throws you.”

Tom Hamblet is feeling on top of the world. It's been four months since the likeable 24-year-old from Horsham in West Sussex lit up our television screens just before Christmas by winning the 16th edition of BBC TV's “Masterchef: The Professionals”

It was 10 years ago when Tom’s culinary talents were first spotted when he won the Rotary Young Chef competition in 2014 – his first cooking competition.

The final took place at the Dundee and Angus College when the then 14- year-old, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Horsham, collected a £250 cheque from Filippo Berio, a bag of Filippo Berio products and a cookery course at Toscana Saporita’s Italian Cookery School in Tuscany.

Tom’s winning menu at the Rotary Young Chef final was seared scallops with mango, Jerusalem artichoke, brown butter and capers for a starter.

That was followed by roasted breast of Gressingham duck, bacon quinoa, char-grilled Wye Valley asparagus, morels and broad beans. Dessert consisted of ginger and honey cake, rhubarb, yoghurt, pistachio and almond.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERS AWARD and YOUNG RYLA

RYLA is a leadership development programme run by Rotary for young adults. Whether you are a secondary school   pupil, university student or young professional, RYLA will help you discover your potential and develop the skills   needed  to be a leader in your community, career and everyday life.       Each RYLA course is sponsored by a local   Rotary club or group and is open to people aged 18 to 26

RYLA programmes run between three to ten days and give participants the opportunity to:

  • Gain exposure to leadership scenarios
  • Explore problem-solving strategies as part of a team
  • Discuss and apply creative approaches to leadership and conflict management
  • Build confidence in yourself and what you can achieve
  • Meet new people and make lasting friendships
  • Learn how to arrange youth activities and community service projects at locally and internationally

Being a leader is not just about being confident enough to speak out and knowing what to say, it is knowing when to   listen to others and understand. RYLA teaches this, and other soft skills, to help everyone to be the best they can be.       Teamwork exercises bring people together from different walks of life in a safe environment where everyone can get to   know each other without fear of exclusion or negativity.

You don’t need to be a high achiever with outstanding academic grades, just be willing to try something new through   activity-based learning and discover new talents along the way, as well as having fun. RYLA programmes involve   physical challenges so can be demanding. Some degree of fitness is required.

The courses are open to people aged 18 to 26.
